Atkinson Youth Services provides a non-public school to service children with the Emotionally Disturbed and Learning Handicapped designations. The program is designed to stimulate the child to want to learn to problem solve, develop independent living skills, and improve socialization skills. Currently AYSSchool has anywhere up to 48 students, 4 classrooms with a teacher and up to 3 instructional assistants per class.

Our mission at AtkinsonYouthServicesSchool is to provide a safe supportive environment where students are empowered to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. AtkinsonYouthServicesSchool is a non-public school specializing in the education of emotionally disturbed and developmentally delayed students. It was founded in 1992 and has continued to grow into a successful, positive, and educational environment for students with special needs.
Opportunities for Parental Involvement
Parents are encouraged to participate in our Spring Parent Luncheon, Fall Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences, IEP meetings, and parent offered training.Teachers communicate to each child’s home through daily evaluations and weekly phone calls to the child’s parent. Parents are also invited to attend school field trips.

Atkinson Youth Services instructional staff consist of 1 teacher 3 teacher’s assistants per classroom of 12 students. Continuous staff development training and activities are scheduled to ensure growth and progress of our team.

Twice a year the school has non-instructional days that are used to provide staff trainings and team building.
Positive Behavior Interventions
Our school program is based on the foundations of Dr. William Glasser’s Reality Therapy and Choice Theory (RT/CT) as well as his concept of the QualitySchool. These theories are based on the idea that we all have five basic psychological and physical needs. These are survival, love and belonging, power and control, freedom, and fun and learning. Each day we concentrate on helping the students fulfill these needs in the most effective way and teach them how to meet them on their own. Through the process of RT/CT we counsel the students to make better choices and to be successful in need fulfillment.Situations in which a student is a danger to self or others, all staff on campus are trained in the Handle With Care physical restraint process. All staff are also extensively trained in Crisis Prevention Technique.

AtkinsonYouthServicesSchool has two qualified substitute teachers on staff that are able to fill in for a teacher at anytime necessary.
School Completion and Postsecondary Preparation
AtkinsonYouthServicesSchool’s goal is to prepare students to graduate back to a less restrictive environment. We have a 57%back to public school (in one year) rate. Due to this goal we do not encourage our students to remain in this environment through high school graduation. We prepare students for their graduation at a public school.
